Lament of Yemen

The Lament of Yemen ((トルコ語:Yemen türküsü)) is a folk song popular in Turkey. According to Turkish sources, the song is a lament about soldiers who died in Yemen. The lyrics contain some Eastern Anatolian words, such as "ano", which means "that", that are not known in the rest of Turkey. It is often said that Ataturk was fond of the song. Note, however, that the lyrics below explicitly talk about the reserve soldiers who have nothing but a pair of shoes and a fez, an Ottoman hat.

Below are the lyrics in Turkish, and English:
Havada bulut yok, bu ne dumandır

Mahlede ölen yok, bu ne figandır

Şu Yemen elleri ne de yamandır
Ano Yemendir, Gülü çemendir

Giden gelmiyor, Acep nedendir

Burası Muş’tur, Yolu yokuştur

Giden gelmiyor, Acep ne iştir
Kışlanın önünde redif sesi var

Bakın çantasında acep nesi var

Bir çift kundurayla bir de fesi var
Ano Yemendir, Gülü çemendir

Giden gelmiyor, Acep nedendir

Burası Muş’tur, Yolu yokuştur

Giden gelmiyor, Acep ne iştir
There is no cloud in the air-

What is that smoke?

There is no death in the neighborhood

What is that cry?

That Yemen lands is so rugged
Over there is Yemen

Its rose is fenugreek

Those who go never return

Why?

Here is Moush

And the road is lumpy

Those who go never return

What's going on?
The voices of reserves in front of the barracks

Open his bag and see what he has

A pair of shoes and a fez
Over there is Yemen...
There are other versions of the Turkish lyrics, centered on changes to the words "Ano" and "Muş" (to Huş).
